Becoming Dauntless: Week of Nov 11

Updates, wins, and asks at our startup, Dauntless XR. Plus our perspective on industry news and the occasional spicy take.

But First…Cool if Real

This is real.

This image is from a 3Dscan of an industrial facility ported into VR. The company behind it, Cintoo, built an SDK to allow companies to do this for themselves. Use cases are still evolving but the main ones today are design reviews, operability assessments, and safety training.

Industry News

  • Apple stopped production on the Vision Pro and is allegedly considering an iPhone-powered version of the device. I'm surprised they didn't start with this...

  • XR company eXeX made the TIME Magazine Best Inventions of 2024 list! Their ExperienceX application creates virtual maps of the operating rooms and guides assistants wearing a headset to where each surgical tool should be throughout the procedure.

  • NOAA launched CCOR-1, the world’s first operational, space-based coronagraph (aka a camera taking pictures of the sun). In the .gif below you can see a CME erupt on the left-hand. CMEs can cause geomagnetic storms on Earth and radiate astronaunts in space so it's important to keep tabs on when one is heading our way. Our Aura application consolidates all the space weather sensors into a single view and we can't wait to get CCOR-1 added to the experience.

Enter the chat. What our devs are talking about this week…

  • “It’s hyped until AI makes its first unintentional kill (which some would argue has happened already) and then AI will be “bad” ...for a while.”

  • “What’s up with all these Splat updates?”

  • “If the government rejects your SBIR proposal six times or more, it’s time to move on”

  • “Sometimes I think you’re inside my brain” - when founders Vulcan mind meld.
